My wild erratic fancy

For a very brief moment about 7 years ago I considered getting a Southern Cross tattoo. I was living abroad at the time and caught up in a bout of home sickness and rugby world cup fueled national pride. But looking back I’m glad I didn’t as such a permanently patriotic form of branding has somehow evolved into something quite sinister....

2010: The Idealist's Manifesto

Censorship reflects society’s fundamental lack of confidence in itself. It truly is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.”Potter Stewart U.S Supreme Court Associate Justice.

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything.

Once again I have become disillusioned to the point of lethargy and inaction with the state of this world, and the state of this government.

In the upcoming election Australia will soon be given the choice between a borderline narcissist who spends his time in office writing children’s books and hating the Chaser, and a pro-life fundamentalist Catholic who prioritises the potential death of future children over the actual deaths of millions of children in the third world.

And just when we were confident that the days of McCarthyism were truly in the past, witch-hunts, blacklists, censorship and indoctrination rears its ugly head.

Any day now a bill will pass through the Senate and the internet will be censored for us, by the government, under the guise of child protection, (without telling us what it is that they are censoring). What threat political satire websites pose to child protection, I can’t say, but as days have passed, we have already seen the government shut down any websites or organisations who in any way question or try to lend transparency to government policy.

Who knows, this one may be next....

Four Things that made me angry in 2009 which should have made more people angry too

2009 was a year full of things that made me very angry, writes Michael Brull.

The world is a terrible and unfair place. Some of the events that I found most shocking received extremely limited public attention. Obviously, not everything can be as important and exciting as Tiger Woods cheating on his wife. Below, I’ve listed four things that I felt were of at least as much significance as Woods’ infidelity. Some of them received virtually no coverage, some of them were simply covered inadequately in the mainstream media (Copenhagen in particular).

Look At All That Choice

‘There you are,’ I screamed dementedly at him, virtually rubbing his face in the heap of white plastic, ‘now you’ve got choice. Look at all that choice. They may all be shit, but look at the choice!’ - Stephen Fry, The BBC and the Future of Broadcasting

2009 is the beginning of the golden age of Australia television. Where once we were forced to pay through the nose if we wanted more than five and a half television channels, we can now flick for hours armed with little more than a digital set-top box and a HD capable TV. Oh how the mighty Foxtel is no doubt quivering in its boots to think that everything they used to offer for a premium is now streamed free of charge into our living rooms. Oh how spoiled we are to live in this enlightened age of choice, choice and more choice.

Or are we?

Calling Bullshit on Bella

I’m sorry but I’m calling bullshit on this whole pop-cultured can of beans that is the Twilight series, and the supposedly “feminist” message it epically fails to portray.

To begin with, the lead female protagonist Bella is a complete and utter bore – a blank slate, whose entire existence, thoughts, and actions revolves around her dull-as-nails, 110 year old, Shakespeare quoting, pedophile vampire dream-beau Edward.

Come gather round pollies wherever you roam,

And admit that the voting electorate’s grown.

First Costello & Nelson – now Malcolm & Joe,

The history of old you’re still paving.

Then you’d better stop spilling & start to evolve,

For your lies are most frustrating.

Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pens,

And explain to Australia why Tony’s our man.

Reclaiming Australia back from the left -

In the wings there’s a Mad Monk in waiting.

Climate change denier and evangelist,

Is it too late to go and exchange him?

Tony Abbott's WHITE Christmas

xmas4

We’re on a bit of a poetry kick at the moment here at Social Scapegoat, possibly as a way to disguise our seething rage. With that in mind, I present to you Tony Abbott’s WHITE Christmas:

He’s dreaming of a WHITE Christmas
Just like the ones he used to know.
Where the liberals glisten,
and children listen,
As church and state are realigned.

Tony Abbott - Our Maligned Little Leader

In the spirit of Abbott’s liberal insurgency, this song is entitled “Tony Abbott, our maligned little leader” (to the tune of “I still call Australia Home”).

Tony AbottHe dreams of cities that only bow down
to The Father, The Son, The Pope, & The Crown
but no matter how far, or how wide he roams
The Vatican will always be home.

So long as he’s leader we’ll never be free.
As long as he sides with the Church and not me.
I can’t believe this was the choice from all three.
It’s a labour election victory.

That's not all folks!

I have been posting for over a year here at An Irritating Truth.

A year is not really a long time in the grand scheme of things, but for me, a lot has happened since the time I decided to start this blog and now. New boyfriends, new friends, and an engagement.

Look, I don't know how to tell you this but, I've been publishing somewhere else.

Don't take it the wrong way, it's not you - it's me.

I just don't feel like I fit in here anymore. I need to go away for a while - find greener pastures.

I am moving away, I've got a newly constructed site with white picket coding.

That's right folks - Gentrification!

Out with the old, and in with the new.

You've all been terrific neighbours and wonderful hosts and I will always cherish the loyalty and support that you have given me during my short stay here.

What I enjoyed the most was hearing from those of you who not only read my self-indulgent rants but left comments and feedback. I love the interactive forum that blogging affords me, and that is one thing that is definitely not going to change.

Regardless, it's been one long, boring, ranty ride... a ride which I am pleased to announce is anything but over because...... I want you to come with me!

Oh come on, don't be a drag! You'll love it!

It's bright and spacious, and it's completely ours to do with as we please!

At Social Scapegoat we burn political correctness to the ground!

Whether you want somewhere to publish your work, slander politicians, or just have a laugh - come along! You know you want to!

http://www.socialscapegoat.com

Fine, have it your way - you know where to find me.

Seriously though, without getting all soppy, I just want to say that this has been a really meaningful experience for me, having somewhere to offload my thoughts.

I cannot believe the amazing positive response I have received over this past year, and I am terribly, terribly flattered that people actually look forward to tuning in to my self-indulgent rants.

Who knew there was a market for selfishness.

Anyway, if you have any questions about getting work published, or anything else, you can always reach me at claire@socialscapegoat.com.

Don't forget - http://www.socialscapegoat.com

Thanks for reading!

Xeno vs Xenu

It’s the first sign of the apocalypse, when religious prophets can’t turn a profit from their followers.

It’s a slippery slope Mr Xenophobe Xenophon is just beginning to skate on.

You mellow headed moderates may argue “oh, he’s just concerned for people’s welfare. Won’t somebody please think of the children!”, but do not let your fair-minded fundamentalism mislead you. Behind this veneer of balance and compromise there lies a darker truth.

Oh it may seem harmless at first, but what starts out as just innocent accusations of exploitation and abuse may result in an impoverished God!

Today it’s the Church of Scientology, tomorrow it could be your local Mosque, or Synagogue, or Buddhist temple, and before you know it tax-happy Xenophon will be taxing the legitimate religions too!

Just imagine the horror: Hillsong or the Catholic Church bereft of funds, forced to stand on street corners in shivering in their itchy trousers, holding signs proclaiming “the end is nigh” scribbled on the backs of cardboard boxes with stolen pens who instead of being ordained in their ministries, are forced to live like beggars because their last payment was deposited in the House of Parliament instead of the House of the Lord.

Should the Australian government really be taxing God?
Because that is what they want to do.

Do you really want that on your conscience Australia?

Do you?

What is this, the Middle Ages? I mean helloooo - poverty is so last century! The only people who take a vow of poverty these days are nuns, and everyone knows they don’t count !

Pfft! Women!

Australia, it is our responsibility as decent God fearing people to stand up for our tax exempt religious institutions’ right to impart enlightenment. Is it too much to ask that we part with a generous portion of our income in return?

Well Mr Xenophon, Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes, Mr. religious morality-this, and God-is-a-tax-evader-that - you are impinging on the rights of the prophets, the chosen, the glorified, and the godlike to accept outrageous offerings from people who are merely looking for self-improvement and meaning.

Religions have been making lots and lots of money from their followers for thousands and thousands of years, (how do you think the Vatican was built for Christ sake?) Well, yes - it was for Christ’s sake, but nonetheless - why are you trying to change precedence?

I mean honestly, what good is there in being able to convey the voice of God, if you it doesn’t come with constitutionally guaranteed tax exemptions?

Get with the times man! Everyone does it. Even a seat in my synagogue requires a yearly fee because: enlightenment requires sacrifice.

Are you suggesting that I risk redemption by withholding the donation that was rightly theirs in the first place?

And now not only does our charity get called into question, but the Church of Scientology might actually have to pay taxes?

And why? Because they believe in aliens? Believing in aliens is no more ludicrous than believing in an invisible and benevolent force that controls the entire universe, past, present and future!

Shun the non-believer! (Shun! Shun!)

Don’t think we don’t see what you are doing, Xeno.

Don’t think that the bizarre similarity between your surname and that of your opponents is the only coincidence in this little sparring match.

You criticize religious institutions for turning a profit from their followers but you just want a slice of the pie!

It is no more your place to question the complex inner dwellings of Scientology, than it is to question the love Catholic priests show for alter boys, or Hillsong record label owners pension for Rolls Royce's, or Buddhist monks to pave their temples in gold with massive sitting deities, or the right a Rabbi has to run a legitimate cocaine, drug, and prostitution ring.

These are chosen people Xenophon! Leave it alone! These are Gods people, and by God they know what they are doing.

And who are we, mere public servants, to question that?

Have some faith man!

Unlike you, real leaders believe in financial risk! And so should we!

And as for this whole mind control accusation, I don’t know what you are getting your knickers in a knot about.

Mind control is a central tenet of religion.

What is religion but the assertion that God and religious clerics know what is better for us than we do?

And now you are trying to take that away from us too!

It’s lunacy and liberalism run mad I tell you!

Without tax exemptions, Australia would be poorer for it.

No longer would our buses, overpasses, billboards & televisions be the bearers of the Good Word – those Jesus is LIFE ads would be the first to go! Next it will be Carols by candle-light, then Christmas & Hanukah, and before you know it there will be no religious holidays at all!

Humbug!

Do you want that Australia?

DO YOU?

Write to Mr Xenophon today and tell him that he is going TO HELL if he makes those who believe in cuddly aliens rather than the lord almighty (blessed be he) pay taxes.

It’s a slippery slope.

A SLIPPERY slope.
