I really do love New York.
It’s weird to think I’ve only been up for seven and a half hours.
Despite my shamefully late start to the day, thanks to a crushing hangover, today has been the most fulfilling day I’ve spent in New York City, (yet).
New York is an expensive city, but for a girl/guy on a budget, there are still plenty of fun things to discover that are great about this city that won’t cost you a dime (or at most a couple of dollars), and to be honest, the stuff you randomly come across is usually way better than anything you’d consider paying for.
Sure it may cost you maybe 5-6 dollars (a relatively small token of appreciation for beloved NYC street performers), but hey you were going to pay 4 dollars for that nasty ass hot-dog.
Sacrifice some calories, it’s worth it .
For example, in heading out to see Strawberry Fields, I came across not one but two different street performances, both equally hilarious and entertaining.
First of though - Strawberry Fields:
It is kind of weird to me, seeing a Beatles tribute in NYC.
(Yeah, yeah - I know they all inhabited New York at one time or another) but still.
After John Lennon died, Yoko Ono spent 1.5 million dollars erecting the memorial that would become known as Strawberry Fields.
The state of New York made Strawberry Fields a “quiet zone”.
That means no musicians, no dogs - (thankfully though, few people follow these rules).
Despite their loving intentions I doubt that quiet contemplation is what John Lennon would have wanted for his memorial, (tranquility is not an adjective that was frequently used to characterise his life); he would have wanted celebration, joy, and massive PDA! (Public Displays of Affection - hi Mum).
I am sad there weren’t any acoustic Beatles cover bands strolling around the park.
It is wonderfully serene though.
I came across this roller-skating competition in the park - it was like a weirdo jumble sale!
So many strange people were out an about, dancing awkwardly.
I tried to get as many as I could on video (stay tuned for facebook/you-tube vidoes).
There were also plenty of hipster photos to be posted on latfh.com.
Stay tuned.
Onward from Central Park West, to Central Park South I came across “Afrobatics” aka “friendly black guys jumping.”
Hilarious!
I’ve never given a street performer more than a couple of dollars but these guys were well deserving of the massive sums bestowed upon them by an appreciative audience, and myself.
They were brilliant!
I’m sure you can find their work on YouTube somewhere.
Acrobatic comedy - who knew it could work so well?
So I’m about to meet up with my friend Sean for a late dinner and some hair of the dog.
More updates to come.
Peace.
